We allow children space to build community, to explore and learn collaboratively, and to inquire and wonder. With nature as our 'third teacher' in the style of Reggio Emilia schools, we encourage children to consistently encounter and re-encounter the natural world that surrounds them. By allowing this encounter and encouraging children to own their learning experiences, we help them to co-create a learn-by-doing environment.

We offer weekday programs for children beginning at age three. These immersive experiences are centered in exploratory play and foster connectedness to peers and to the natural world.

Come and explore the forest with us! On Saturdays, we offer two classes: one for caregivers and infants (up to age three) and another for children ages three to six.

Learn More

We invite you to learn more about NOLA Nature School. Learn about our curriculum, guiding principles, and meet the team of educators behind this exciting program.

Clare Loughran was asked to conceptualize a nature preschool program as part of her master’s degree in early childhood. After much groundwork, NOLA Nature School began operations in January of 2017 with the goal of fostering children’s connection to and love of the natural world. One of the first programs of its kind both in the state of Louisiana and the Deep South as a whole, NOLA Nature School is rooted in the philosophy that children are competent and capable constructors of their learning experience and that nature provides a plethora of rich materials with which to do this.

Nature House

We are located in City Park’s Couturie Forest, a 60-acre nature reserve that features tall trees and shrubs, ample wildlife of various shapes and sizes, and a mix of walking trails and off-course paths ripe for exploration. ‘The Forest’ as we refer to it, is bordered on three edges by a body of water where fish swim, pelicans and herons strut, and water hyacinth blooms in abundance. This rich natural landscape affords children many avenues to hone and explore new abilities and strengths as well as to become adept observers of their world that evolves with the passing of the seasons.
